NONPF & Policy Activities
NONPF is pleased to be part of a collaborative with the American Academy of NPs (AANP) and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) to advance the interests of nurse practitioners. The collaborative is represented by Dave Mason of Mason Consulting LLC in advocacy activities. NONPF's involvement in this collaborative is primarily to help inform and shape policy initiatives of relevance to our members. Drs. Nancy Ridenour and Eileen O'Grady represent NONPF on the Joint Steering Committee for the collaborative.
NONPF is also a member organization of the NP Roundtable. This collaborative includes NAPNAP, the American Academy of NPs (AANP), the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses of America (GAPNA), and the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH). The NP Roundtable has been collaborating for several years to advance common policy agenda items and to respond in a unified manner to policy issues.
NONPF also is part of the Nursing Community, a forum that focuses broadly on policy issues for nursing, including Title VIII appropriations.
For over 10 years, NONPF has had a collaborative agreement with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to collect data jointly on NP enrollment and graduations. These data are useful to workforce planning.
NP Enrollment and Graduation Data
The 2015-2016 NP enrollment and graduation data collected jointly by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) show 20,616 new NP graduates. In January 2013, the Nurse Practitioner Roundtable compiled a Bibliographyof Articles & Reports Relevant to Quality, Outcomes, Access, &Patient Satisfaction of Nurse Practitioner Services.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on July 30 the selection of 5 sites to participate in the Graduate Nursing Education (GNE) Demonstration to support the clinical training of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNS). The five awardees are Duke University Hospital, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and Scottsdale Healthcare Medical Center.
CMS will provide reimbursement to the five hospitals for the reasonable cost of clinical preparation of additional APRN students receiving training as a result of the GNE Demonstration. These hospitals must partner with accredited schools of nursing and non-hospital community-based care settings. Payment will be calculated on a per-student basis, comparing previous enrollment levels in APRN training programs with enrollment under the demonstration.
The schools participating in the demonstration with the selected hospitals all have NP programs:

The GNE Demonstration Project was included in the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (Public Law 111-148). The law stipulates that the participating hospitals must enter a partnership and contract with one or more schools of nursing and two or more non-hospital, community-based care settings. The reimbursement can only be used for the costs of clinical training for an increased number of APRN enrollments.
NONPF, AACN, AANA, ACNM, AANP, NACNS, AONE, AAN, and AARP worked collaboratively in recent years to support the deveopment of the GNE Demonstration.
