The National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education
The multi-organizational National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education (NTF) that developed the 4th edition of the evaluation criteria document included representation from the following organizations: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Association of Critical Care Nurses Certification Corporation, American Nurses Credentialing Center, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Association of Faculties of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses,National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health, National Certification Corporation, National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.
Friends of the NTF who participated regularly in the discussions of the NTF: National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the Division of Nursing within the Bureau of Health Professions/Health Resources and Services Administration.
History of the NTF and the Evaluation Criteria
In 1995-1997, NONPF facilitated the work of the National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education (NTF) to develop the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs. This multi-organizational task force established the goals to 1) develop standardized criteria for evaluation of NP programs, 2) pilot test the criteria as a self-study document, 3) develop an implementation/ dissemination plan for the criteria, and 4) seek the endorsement of the criteria from participating organizations and other selected nursing organizations. The work was funded in part by the Division of Nursing, Bureau of Health Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. The NTF completed and released the first edition of the evaluation criteria in 1997.
The multi-organizational NTF conducts periodic review and updating of the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs. The review process is part of the NTF's commitment to ensure that the document retains its currency and also to provide the opportunity to refine the wording and include additional elaboration, as necessary, to enhance clarity. NONPF has been pleased to continue its role in facilitating the work of the NTF, and was joined by AACN as a co-facilitator in recent editions. The second edition of the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs was released in 2002, the third edition in 2008, and the most recent 4th edition released in 2012. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) has adopted the evaluation criteria into their accreditation standards. The National League For Nursing has endorsed the evaluation criteria and recognizes this document as the national standard for nurse practitioner educational programs.

This paper is intended as a resource to faculty and directors in psychiatric-mental health NP programs to facilitate program congruence with the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs. NONPF, as well as the International Nurses Society on Addictions, have endorsed this document. We hope that this document will give useful guidance to programs. The document is specific to the current edition of the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs (2008) and does not address the 2008 Consensus Model for APRN Regulation.
