Competencies for Nurse Practitioners

Core Competencies for Nurse Practitioners

Since 1990, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has identified core competencies for all nurse practitioners (NPs). These represent the entry into practice competencies upon graduation from a NP educational program. The most current version of the competencies was released in 2006 and reflects significant simplification and clarification from earlier editions. We are providing the 2002 competencies link for comparison, if desired.

Population-Focused Competencies for Nurse Practitioners

With the release in 2008 of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation, NONPF has adopted the term "population focus" to describe the broad area of preparation for NPs. Previously, NP educators referred to this area of population as specialty. The recognized population foci are Adult-Gerontological, Family (Across Lifespan), Neonatal, Pediatrics, Women's Health-Gender Related, and Psychiatric-Mental Health. The links below are to the existing competencies for population foci that were developed in a national consensus process. Efforts are currently underway to update (and merge, as applicable) competencies to reflect the population foci titles recognized in the Consensus Model.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Nurse Practitioner Competencies

In a project led by NONPF, the National Panel for NP Practice Doctorate Competencies identified the entry level competencies for all nurse practitioners completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) / practice doctorate program. These competencies build on the core and population-focused competencies for NPs. NONPF is currently undertaking a review of the competencies that would include integration of all the competencies for NP preparation.
