Dimensions of the NP Kaleidoscope: Education, Practice, Research, & Advocacy

Call for Abstracts

Submission Deadline:  October 17, 2005
NONPF invites the submission of abstracts for individual podium (paper) presentations, traditional or electronic poster presentations, workshops, or symposia.  See below for abstract submission guidelines for the different presentation types, and follow the link for the newly enhanced electronic submission forms.  If you have any questions about the abstract submission process, please contact Jennifer Rabinovitz.  All abstracts undergo blind, peer review before selection for presentation. NONPF will notify of acceptance by December 15.

Guidelines for Submission of Abstracts for Podium or Poster Presentations

  • Submit abstracts electronically via the main Abstract Submission page.
  • Abstracts should be 350 words or less. 
  • Topics should be pertinent to NP education and consistent with the theme.  Sample topics might include competency evaluation, curriculum development, preceptor issues, new and emerging content areas, interdisciplinary models, evidence-based practice, faculty practice, and more.
  • Presentation Types:  Podium - oral, 20-minute presentation; Poster - traditional display on poster board on a designated day, eligible for the APEA Outstanding Poster Award;.*  Electronic Poster - a laptop display on a designated day, eligible for the APEA Outstanding Poster Award.  (See below for Guidelines for Symposium and Workshop presentations)
  • Presenters are responsible for their own registration fee, hotel accommodations, and travel.
  • NONPF will notify the main contact person of acceptance by December 15.  Presenter biosketches due at time of submission.  The presentation content outline will be due January 25.  Abstracts will appear in the conference syllabus.
  • Criteria for the evaluation of podium and poster abstracts:
  • Education Topics:  1) Topics/Purpose is consistent with the conference them and/or highly significant to the NP role; (2) soundness of education intervention (e.g., methodology, pedagogy or andragogy); (3) feasibility of implementation of education intervention/strategy; (4) innovation of educational strategies; (5) effectiveness/evaluation of the educational strategy; and (6) overall education merit: relevant, timely, and creative.
  • Research Topics:  (1) Topic/purpose is consistent with the conference them and/or highly significant to the NP role; (2) quality, appropriateness and completeness of the design and sample; (3) clear and adequate description of methods (instruments, procedures, analysis, and intervention); (5) discussion/conclusion is linked to the NP role (education, research, practice and/or advocacy); and (6) overall scientific merit: relevant, timely, and creative.
  • Practice & Advocacy Topics:  (1) Topic/purpose is consistent with the conference theme and/or highly significant to the NP practice role; (2) contribution of intervention to improved outcomes; (3) innovation of strategies/methodology; (4) application of findings/outcomes; (5) effectiveness/evaluation of the strategy; and (6) overall merit: relevant, timely, and creative.

Submission Deadline: October 17, 2005 (On-line submission closes at midnight.  Postmark deadline for mailed submissions.)

*Poster award criteria include: (1) clarity of description; (2) Scope of objectives; (3) Attainability of objectives; (3) Originality of content; (4) Creativity of presentation; (5) Relevant to NP education, practice, service or research; (6) Handouts; (7) Overall design; (8) Oral summary and answers to questions.

Guidelines for Submission of Symposia/Workshops

  • Submit electronically.  Go to the main Abstract Submission page.
  • A minimum of 3 presenters is required for a workshop or symposium. One presenter should be identified as the coordinator, who will lead/moderate the session and serve as contact person for the submission.
  • Symposia and workshops each have 75 minutes for presentation as a concurrent session open to the general meeting participants.
  • Topics should be pertinent to NP education and consistent with the conference theme.  Sample topics might include competency evaluation, teaching strategies (traditional and on-line), curriculum development, preceptor issues, new and emerging content areas, interdisciplinary models, evidence-based practice, faculty practice, faculty and leadership development, and more.
  • NONPF will notify the coordinator of acceptance by December 15.  Presenter biosketches due at time of submission.  The presentation content outline will be due January 25.  Abstract(s) will appear in the conference syllabus.
  • Presenters are responsible for their own registration fee, hotel accommodations, and travel arrangements.
  • Symposia consist of 2-3 related presentations oriented toward a specific topic and involve a synthesis of knowledge.  Symposia can be concerned with research (completed), education, practice, or advocacyA symposium submission should include abstracts (350 words or less) for each presentation, as well as one integrating abstract

Symposium Review Criteria: (1) Topic/purpose is consistent with the conference theme and/or highly significant to the NP role; (2) purpose/significance of educational, practice, or research strategies; (3) innovative or creative topic or application of ideas; (4) appropriate expected outcomes are identified; (5) proposed presentation appropriate for expected outcomes; and (6) overall merit for faculty development.

  • Workshops should present a "How-To" session related to teaching strategies.  Workshop submissions should include 1 abstract providing an overview of the workshop and, if applicable, additional abstracts to describe different presentations within the workshop.  Single abstracts should not exceed 350 words; increased length accepted for single abstract description of the workshop.

Workshop Review Criteria: (1) Topic/purpose is consistent with the conference theme and/or highly significant to the NP role; (2) purpose/significance of educational, practice, or research strategies; (3) innovative or creative topic or application of ideas; (4) appropriate expected outcomes are identified; (5) proposed presentation appropriate for expected outcomes; and (6) overall merit for faculty development.
