MENTORING OPPORTUNITY FOR ABSTRACT
SUBMISSION QUALITY & SAFETY IN NP EDUCATION
In 2008, the Quality and Safety Education
for Nurses (QSEN) project completed Phase II which involved the drafting
of knowledge, skills, and attitude (KSA) targets for graduate nursing
education. This work builds on the quality and safety competencies for
nursing developed through Phase I. The QSEN principal investigator, Dr.
Linda Cronenwett, presented the graduate nursing KSA targets to the
membership of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties
(NONPF) in spring 2008. In support of nurse practitioner education for
quality practice, the NONPF Board of Directors formed a task force under
the leadership of Joanne Pohl and gave the task force the charge to
evaluate the QSEN graduate nursing education KSA targets relative to
core and DNP competencies for nurse practitioners. The task force
completed an extensive comparison of the existing competencies for all
NPs, the NP DNP competencies, and the Knowledge targets of the QSEN
advanced practice competencies. Click
here to access the project
report. The task force will continue its work this summer of comparing
the NP competencies with the Skills and Attitude targets of the QSEN
competencies. NEW BOARD MEMBERS In April, newly elected members began serving term of office on the NONPF Board of Directors. NONPF and the Institute for Nursing Centers (INC) jointly offered a Webcast on September 24, 1:00-2:30 PM Eastern, entitled "Quality Improvement for Advanced Practice Nurses." Kathryn Fiandt, DNS, FAANP, of the University of Texas Medical Branch and Dr. Sheila Ryan, PhD, RN, FAAN, of the University of Nebraska, presemted the seminar to discuss the role of quality in ambulatory health care delivery systems, types of benchmarking and outcome data, the process of quality improvement, options for educating NP students regarding quality improvement, and how to distinguish quality improvement from research. Obtain the Archive CD from the INC/Michigan Public Health Institute office using the attached order form.
NONPF ENDORSES MODEL FOR FUTURE REGULATION OF APRNS The NONPF Board of Directors has endorsed the paper "Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, & Education." This document was developed through the work of the APRN Consensus Work Group and the NCSBN APRN Advisory Committee and defines APRN practice, describes the APRN regulatory model, identifies the titles to be used, defines specialty, describes the emergence of new roles and population foci, and presents strategies for implementation. To implement fully the future model for regulation, changes to all the LACE (licensure, accreditation, certification, and education) components will be necessary. A new organization to represent LACE is in development with a priority focus to facilitate rapid implementation of the regulatory model. NONPF encourages members to read the paper, and NONPF will be offering information sessions for members on the impact on NP education.
NURSING WORKFORCE DATA RESOURCE The Interagency Collaborative on Nursing Statistics (ICONS) has made available to the public the Web-based “Resource Document” on research conducted by member organizations. The resource document identifies the research conducted by and resources available from the member organizations of ICONS: AACN (Colleges of Nursing), AACN (Critical Care Nurses), AANP, ANA, ACNM, BHPr, BLS, CGFNS, NACNS, NCSBN, and NONPF. The resource document is available to access from the “Research” tab of the ICONS Web site - http://www.iconsdata.org/

REVISED CRITERIA FOR NP PROGRAMS
NONPF offered a teleweb session entitled Doctoral Education for NPs: Sample Curriculum Templates on October 31, 2007. NONPF has developed exemplars of NP curriculum templates for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs to provide faculty with sample resources and to foster creative thinking in the curriculum transformation process for quality NP education. This session presented sample post-BSN and post-masters curriculum models and discussion on strategies for curriculum development and integration of NP competencies. Archive program is now available. RESOURCE FOR APRN CURRICULUM & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS A new curriculum resource is available for APRN educators: APRN Education for Emergency Preparedness and All Hazards Response: Resources and Suggested Content. Developed by a national panel of APRN organizational representatives and content experts, the document provides suggested curriculum content within a framework that reviews the roles and opportunities for APRNs in all phases of disaster response. The document presents suggested critical content for all APRNs as well as detailed content and Web-based resources as a guide for curriculum development. See the project page to access this highly valuable resource document.
